Another victory for Twins, and a milestone for Carlos Correa

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:39:59 GMT

Choosing the Twins’ player of the game after Tuesday afternoon’s 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals would have been a daunting task. So many of them played large roles in the team’s fourth victory in five games.Right fielder Max Kepler, for instance, drove in four runs and broke the game open with a two-out, three-run homer off Zack Greinke in the third inning. Starter Kenta Maeda gave up one earned run and struck out nine in a season-high seven innings.Byron Buxton and Donovan Solano each went 3 for 4 with a solo homer and three runs scored. Alex Kirilloff hit a two-run single to cap the Twins’ scoring in the seventh. And then there was Carlos Correa, who finished with just a single in five at-bats. That single to right, however, was the 1,000th base hit of his career and earned him a ceremonial trophy in a postgame ceremony.“We gave him a ball that I know he’ll keep,” manager Rocco Baldelli said.Since a closed-door, players-only meeting after the team was swept in a three-game...

It’s time for a July to make Colorado fans cry. That’s assuming, of course, they have any tears left to give. After Houston handed Colorado a third straight loss to begin the month Tuesday afternoon inside Minute Maid Park — a 4-1 defeat — the Rockies are back on track to submit the first 100-loss season in franchise history. At 33-54, they now have a .379 win percentage after delivering a dud on the Fourth of July holiday — a pace that would result in a 61-101 finish.Left-hander Kyle Freeland, the staff ace by virtue of the raft of injuries that’s hit Colorado’s rotation, battled in his 17th start of the season. The control issues that derailed Freeland’s last outing, when he gave up five walks and six runs in a 9-8 Colorado win over the Dodgers, weren’t as pronounced Tuesday. But his velocity was still lacking as the lefty threw 56 of 91 pitches for strikes and finished with four runs, nine hits, two walks and three strik...

“Liberty, equality, fraternity” for all? New riots make France confront an old problem

PARIS — “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”: The lofty ideals to which France has long aspired are embossed on coins and carved above school doors across the land. Yet they are the polar opposite of what some French people who are Black or brown saw in a shocking video of a police officer shooting and killing a 17-year-old delivery driver of north African descent during a traffic stop. That kid, some said to themselves, could have been me — or my children, or my friends. Within hours, the first fires of anger and revenge were lighting up the night skies of Nanterre, the Paris suburb where the teenager, Nahel, was declared dead at 9:15 a.m. last Tuesday. His left arm and chest had been pierced from left to right by a single shot fired before the yellow Mercedes he was driving then slammed into barriers on Nelson Mandela Square. From the town on the fringe of the French capital’s high-rise business district, with its disadvantaged housing projects, glaring wealth gaps, and melti...
