3 activists are acquitted of defaming a Thai poultry company accused of violating labor laws BANGKOK (AP) — Three human rights activists were acquitted Tuesday of criminally defaming a Thai poultry company with social media posts that supported other activists who had accused it of abusive labor practices, according to the defendants and their lawyer. They were charged under a law that could have led to a 42-year prison sentence if convicted. The company, Thammakaset, said the defendants’ social media comments linked indirectly to what it called a defamatory video produced by a human rights group, Fortify Rights, containing an interview with a worker who claimed abusive working conditions. A German appeals court had ordered a new sentencing hearing for the woman, who has been identified only as Jennifer W. in line with German privacy rules, after the country’s Federal Court of Justice threw out an appeal by the defendant but partly approved an appeal by prosecutors. Vehicle inspection system back in operation, DPS says AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Department of Public Safety said Monday its system to inspect vehicles had been fixed after a hardware failure last week. DPS said there was "no longer an interruption to service at this time."A hardware failure that started on Aug. 23 led to an outage at the vehicle inspection system, DPS said. Department workers were able to replace the damaged hardware over the weekend and finalize testing overnight on Sunday in order to allow inspections to resume on Monday morning, according to DPS. RELATED: DPS reports vehicle inspection system outage The department said the outage would not allow stations in "safety-only" counties to conduct proper vehicle inspections.
